Is Occupational Therapy what your child needs?

At Whole children’s coopational therapy we cover a wide range of conditions, including autism, ADHD, sensory processing disorder, and more. Services include assessments, therapy interventions such as sensory integration and motor skills development, support for daily activities, handwriting interventions, social skills training, behavior management strategies, parent education, collaboration with other professionals, and early intervention services, and support for adoption situations.

  • Assessments:

I conduct comprehensive 2-hour assessments of children's occupational function at my therapy space in Bath. Using standardized tests and observations, I identify areas of need and tailor interventions accordingly. Afterward, I provide a detailed report and a 1-hour feedback session with parents via video call. For children who may find a 2-hour assessment challenging, I offer customized assessments adjusted to their needs.

  • Intervention:

In practice, I adopt a developmental, bottom-up approach to tailor intervention plans uniquely for each child and their family. This is achieved through a range of therapeutic interventions, including the DIR Floortime model, Ayers Sensory Integration, and Tomatis® Listening, among others. Therapy typically occurs on a weekly basis through face-to-face sessions. Additional options like intensive therapy blocks and online support are also offered.

  • Training:

As an experienced DIR Floortime Trainer, I conduct regular online training sessions via the International Council of Development & Learning (ICDL). To attend an online course, please reach out to ICDL directly at their website.

In collaboration with Maude le Roux, I offer a developmental course that focuses on the initial four years of life, accessible through her website.

Additionally, I offer tailored training for various organizations, such as educational and healthcare institutions. The cost will vary based on the specific needs and goals of the training program to be provided.

  • Mentoring:

I am always eager to offer one-on-one mentoring for fellow qualified occupational therapists or professionals. This can encompass reviewing case studies, delivering training, and suggesting intervention strategies, among others. These sessions are conducted online, with availability in the evening.

Qualifications:

  • The Department of Occupational Therapy at the University of Pretoria holds transformation and diversity in high regard, aspiring to be a globally respected institution committed to research excellence, community involvement, and innovative education. Occupational therapy, a healthcare discipline, promotes health and well-being by facilitating engagement in daily activities. As occupational therapists, we assist individuals of all ages facing physical and mental challenges in leading fulfilling and independent lives. We collaborate with individuals affected by health conditions and/or disabilities, empowering them to function autonomously or optimally in their chosen activities and environments. Furthermore, we provide support to those experiencing functional limitations due to disabilities and societal obstacles, adapting activities or environments to uphold their independence.

  • Ayres Sensory Integration® (ASI) stands as a cornerstone in therapeutic practice, continually expanding its reach across diverse settings including homes, schools, and communities. Developed by A. Jean Ayres, PhD, OTR, FAOTA, a pioneering occupational therapist, psychologist, and neuroscientist, this framework initially proved effective in aiding children with learning and behavioral challenges. Over time, it has evolved into an evidence-based approach particularly beneficial for children on the autism spectrum. Its versatility extends to individuals with various disabilities and across different age groups. ASI's trademark serves as a beacon, guiding researchers, therapists, and parents to grasp its fundamental principles and distinguish it from other sensory-based interventions

  • The DIR Floortime model is deeply personal for me. It's not just about therapy; it's about empowering children with developmental differences, like autism spectrum disorder (ASD), to thrive emotionally, socially, and cognitively. As an Advanced Provider in this model, I've honed my skills through extensive training, hands-on experience, and mentorship. I strive to understanding each child's unique developmental profile, crafting tailored interventions, and fostering meaningful interactions that drive progress in communication, social connection, and self-regulation.

As an Expert Training Leader, I'm passionate about sharing my expertise with fellow professionals, parents, and caregivers. Through training and mentoring, I aim to empower others to implement the DIR Floortime model effectively, extending its benefits to more children and families in need.

  • I utilize the Tomatis Method, a groundbreaking sound-based therapy developed by French ear, nose, and throat specialist Dr. Alfred Tomatis. This innovative approach is designed to enhance auditory processing and sensory integration through carefully crafted music and sound exercises. In my practice, I employ this method to assist individuals confronting difficulties in auditory processing, speech and language development, learning, and sensory processing. Through tailored listening programs and cutting-edge equipment, my goal is to improve auditory skills and facilitate comprehensive sensory processing and communication abilities.

  • IAs an Interactive Metronome (IM) Provider, I am trained in the implementation of Interactive Metronome therapy, a neuro-motor training program devised to refine timing, coordination, and cognitive capacities.

Interactive Metronome therapy entails involving the individual in repetitive motor actions synchronized to a precise auditory rhythm, necessitating them to synchronize their movements with the rhythm's timing. This therapy endeavors to elevate the individual's aptitude to process and amalgamate sensory input, heighten attention, concentration, and impulse regulation, and amplify motor planning and coordination proficiencies.

What our parents say about us

“My five year old son is autistic and non-verbal, and I remember feeling so alone and desperately in need of support before we found Millicent. In the 18 months we have been doing therapy with her he has made some amazing progress and he loves coming to his sessions.

Something I've found here that I haven't found in any other support services we've encountered, is the reassurance of having a professional who cares deeply for the happiness and wellbeing of your child, gets to know them as an individual, and has a long-term commitment to their development. Suddenly your journey is not so lonely anymore and your child has another person in their life who brings them love and joy.”
